If you are handy: the anode rod is a swap, usually a 1 1/16 inch socket on the hex at the top of the heater, with the power or gas off and the tank pressure released first. An aluminum-zinc rod in place of magnesium is the usual change. Some tanks have the rod hidden under the top cover, and some are seized in hard enough that it turns into a service call anyway.
